Carmelite wisdom to encourage & inspire
On 10 January 1889 St. Thérèse was clothed in the holy habit of Carmel in the Discalced Carmelite monastery of Lisieux, France. Concerning that day she wrote, “The wait had been long, but what a beautiful celebration it was!" On 28 November 1568, the Discalced Carmelite friars began their new life in Duruelo. St Teresa wrote: “the first Mass was said in that little stable of Bethlehem, for it doesn't seem to me the house was any better.”

St. Elizabeth of the Trinity began her ten-day retreat on this day in 1904, the first since her profession retreat in January 1903. She told her sister that the extra solitude and prayer “created a very enticing schedule” because “I'm going to lose myself in Him.”
St. Teresa of the Andes had a lively devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. In this prayer from 1917, she writes, "may your Heart be my refuge, my hope, my consolation, my solitude."
St John of the Cross urges us to practice interior solitude so that our hearts may focus on God alone.

On 10 August 1591 Saint John of the Cross transferred from the friars’ convent in Segovia to the solitude of La Peñuela

"This prophet whom God commanded to go forth into the desert... is to be the model of all who withdraw into solitude"
We can say without exaggeration that few young girls have loved her Lord Jesus. In order to find her Beloved, she walked through the very heart of the desert...
We rest when we seek a "solitary place" (Mk. 6:31) to be silent; to enter into ourselves; to listen to our conscience and perceive, beyond our fears and tensions, the presence of God who loves and cares for us.
The immense blessings of God can only enter and fit into an empty and solitary heart.
