On 12 April 1920, St Teresa of Jesus Fernández Solar died in her beloved Carmel of Los Andes Chile; she was less than 20 yrs old, had received the habit only 6 months earlier, and made a deathbed profession.
In 1997, St. John Paul II wrote of St. Thérèse of Lisieux:
"Jesus said to them, 'Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation'" (Mk 16:15). In the midst of weariness, uncertainty and pain, there is "good news": Jesus offers us truth, health, forgiveness, strength in weakness and infinite hope.
"Sometimes, being absent is a better way of being present," says Bishop Silvio José Báez. Two years ago on 10 April 2019, he announced that Pope Francis had asked him to leave his diocese and come to Rome for an undetermined period of time. The bishop's life was in danger; in the summer of 2018, the USA had uncovered a plot to assassinate not only the bishop but also the US ambassador to Nicaragua. Pope Francis told Bishop Báez, "I don't want another martyred bishop in Nicaragua." One lesson that our Discalced Carmelite confrere says that he has learned from his exile is that sometimes, absence is a superior means to be present to the ones he loves.
St. Mary of Jesus Crucified, like so many other Carmelites, experienced "abominable temptations". Today, we learn how she fought the good fight against Satan.
On 8 April 1906, St Elizabeth of the Trinity became unconscious. The priest from the nearby parish was called to anoint her. When he arrived, she was conscious again; receiving extreme unction, she exclaimed, "O Love, Love!"
