Quote of the day, 17 February: St. Albert of Jerusalem

After the forced departure of Cardinal Soffredo as Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, the Canons Regular of the Holy Sepulchre, supported by King Aimery of Lusignan, elected St. Albert Avogadro as their Patriarch on 17 February 1205. Pope Innocent III ratified the appointment, begging St. Albert to accept the election: “although you are very necessary to us in Lombardy, we completely trust you to represent us in the most difficult matters.”

Pope Innocent III, on the 17th of February 1205, gave St. Albert of Jerusalem a pressing invitation to accept his postulation as Patriarch of Jerusalem, made by the canons of the Holy Sepulchre, by the suffragan bishops and by the King of Jerusalem, Almaricus II of Lusignano. On account of the esteem he had for Albert, the Pope appointed him Legate for the Holy Land, as well.
