Quote of the day, 10 September: Père Jacques devoted his Friday evening retreat conference at the Carmel of Pontoise to the Cross and suffering. Paraphrasing St Teresa, he said, “Life without suffering is a waste of time. Every hour not united to God's will is an hour squandered.”
Père Jacques commented on evil during a preached retreat in the fall of 1943: "The profound problem of evil is a scandal that keeps many people far from God and drives many others away from him... Take war, for example, with its deliberate destruction of cities and its unjustifiable slaughter of the elderly and the innocent, of women and children..."
Within the cross is life and consolation. It alone is the road leading to heaven.
Especially during Lent try to have periods of solitude, silence, and recollection alone with Jesus in the desert. Minister to him with the angels, work for him after the example of St. Joseph in the home of Nazareth and live in the world as if not living there...
We recall that on 3 February 1944 the three Jewish boys who Father Jacques had hidden in his school were deported to Auschwitz
Holy Spirit, inspire me; Love of God, consume me

On 24th August 1562, Saint Teresa of Avila founded the first monastery of her Discalced Carmelite reform in Avila, Spain under the patronage of Saint Joseph. Do you know why? Because there was a crisis in the Church!
