We who are living in the current drama of our society know about the injustice and arrogance of the powerful, the manipulation of religion, violent repression, and the use of fear as a form of domination. All of these shady schemes are opposed to God’s plan.
We have the right to dream of a Nicaragua without rulers who oppress the people, where the dignity and rights of every person are respected, where we put off particular interests to share our goods and concerns in peace and justice, and where dissent from power is not a crime.
Bishop Silvio José Báez, o.c.d.
Auxiliary Bishop of Managua
Homily, 12 August 2018 (excerpt)
Even praying nuns kneeling in the middle of the street couldn’t prevent a deadly attack on Divine Mercy Church in Managua, Nicaragua 13-14 July 2018. Police and paramilitary troops carried out a 15-hour siege on the church, killing two students, and injuring at least a dozen more. From that moment, the bishops called for a month of fasting, prayer and reparation. Bishop Báez tweeted: “given the prophetic dimension of our ministry we have had to go to places of conflict to defend the lives of the defenseless, bring comfort to victims and mediate for a peaceful solution to the situation.”
