Quote of the day, 4 March: Józef Kucharczyk, o.c.d.

Our presence here in Ukraine is important so that the people can feel this kind of security—spiritual security—because we priests and sisters are with them here.

Today, for example, a young girl called me, begging: “Father, at three o’clock, we are all joining in prayer to ask for mercy for Ukraine.”

Every day and every night, we have these initiatives either from the people or from the friars and sisters to unite in prayer. This is very important for the people as well as for us.

Father Józef Kucharczyk, o.c.d.

Provincial Delegate in Ukraine
Currently stationed in Kyiv with the Discalced Carmelite nuns

[Nota Bene: As of 8 March 2022, the last four nuns in Kyiv had departed for Poland, and Father Józef said in a video that the friars in Kyiv, prompted by the Lord through the intercession of St. Joseph, were discerning their next steps.]

The Shrine of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Berdychiv, Ukraine was founded by the Kyiv Governor, Yanush Tyshkevych in 1630 as a sign of gratitude for his release from Tatar captivity. With the exception of the Communist era, the Discalced Carmelite friars have served in Ukraine since the 17th century. Within the shrine church, the faithful venerate the miraculous icon of the Mother of Mercy, “Beauty and Patroness of the Ukrainian Steppes.”

Note from the blogger: We are deeply grateful to the Secretary for Information of the Discalced Carmelite General Curia for his kind permission to publish our translation of Father General Miguel Márquez Calle’s interview with Father Kucharczyk on 28 February 2022, which was published on the General Curia’s Facebook page. Watch for our complete interview translation to follow in a separate blog post.
