James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” And he said to them, “What is it you want me to do for you?” And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” They replied, “We are able.” Then Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”
Mark 10:35-40
His Majesty knows best what is suitable for us. There’s no need for us to be advising Him about what He should give us, for He can rightly tell us that we don’t know what we’re asking for [cf. Mk 10:38]. The whole aim of any person who is beginning prayer — and don’t forget this, because it’s very very important — should be that he work and prepare himself with determination and every possible effort to bring his will into conformity with God’s will.
Saint Teresa of Avila
The Interior Castle II, ch. 1, no. 8
Teresa of Avila, St. 1985, The Collected Works of St. Teresa of Avila, translated from the Spanish by Kavanaugh, K; Rodriguez, O, ICS Publications, Washington DC.
One of the few things I can still remember reading is her injunction that we not pray and talk to God “as if we were talking to one of our servants”…. My old Formator used to drill into me: “determined determination”!
It sounds as if you will have the best formator ever if you keep reading Teresa with great fidelity.
Thank you!! Fr Matt Blake gave us my only OCDS Retreat, on the Life. He gave us each 30 minutes’ spiritual direction. he had told us of St Teresa’s life before her serious spiritual life. I said my preceding 40 years had been similar. He became very animated, I will I hope never forget, and said with enthusiasm, “Well, if it gets you where it got Teresa!!”… On eof the other things that week was the part where the Saint writes of those led by the Holy Spirit: “They are not without a Superior”. That’s what remains of Carmel, to me…
