Our padre [Jerónimo Gracián] is well, glory to God. But he has many trials, for, as you know, the nuncio [Nicolás Ormaneto] died and [Jerónimo Tostado], who is the vicar general sent by our Most Reverend Padre, [Giovanni Battista Rossi, O.Carm.] is in Madrid. Although the king until now has not wanted him to carry on any visitations, we don’t know how things will end up.
Our padre‘s commission [as apostolic visitator] has not ended even though the nuncio is dead, and so he is still visitator. I believe he is in Pastrana now. Much prayer is necessary so that what is for the greater service of God will be done. We are praying much here and have held processions. Don’t neglect to do this, for the need is now great, although it appears that everything will turn out all right.
Saint Teresa of Avila
Letter 200 to Madre Ana de San Alberto
2 July 1577
Nicolás Ormaneto (in Italian, Nicolò Ormanetto) was the “holy nuncio” who was so in favor of the work of St. Teresa. He died in Madrid 18 June 1577. The Teresian scholar Kieran Kavanaugh, O.C.D. indicates that Ormaneto’s successor, Felipe Sega (in Italian, Filippo Sega, c. 1537-1596) came to Spain (30 August 1577) “badly disposed toward Teresa and her work because of misinformation he had received in Rome prior to his departure”.
