Quote of the day, 9 January: Oswaldo Azuaje, O.C.D.

To leave the Order, which has been my home — where I have lived and breathed — it isn’t easy. It’s hard for a sinner like myself, who has lived in the Carmelite Order as my “maternal home”, to leave the Teresian Carmel where I’ve received everything.

Bishop Oswaldo Azuaje, O.C.D.
On his episcopal ordination, 2007
(19 October 1951 – 8 January 2021)

We express our deepest condolences to the entire family of the Teresian Carmel in Venezuela as they mourn the untimely death of their brother, Bishop Cástor Oswaldo Azuaje Pérez, O.C.D. of the Diocese of Trujillo, Venezuela. We invite you to read our obituary and learn more about the life and ministry of this great Carmelite.

Please join us in praying for the repose of the soul of Bishop Oswaldo Azuaje:

Lord,
you are the glory of those who serve you.
Look lovingly on our departed brother,
united in following Christ and his Mother
by the waters of baptism and the bonds of Carmel.
In your mercy
grant him everlasting sight of you,
his Creator and Redeemer.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever.

  1. Psalm 130:

    1Out of the depths have I called to you, O Lord;
    Lord, hear my voice; *
    let your ears consider well the voice of my supplication.

    2If you, Lord, were to note what is done amiss, *
    O Lord, who could stand?

    3For there is forgiveness with you; *
    therefore you shall be feared.

    4I wait for the Lord; my soul waits for him; *
    in his word is my hope.

    5My soul waits for the Lord,
    more than watchmen for the morning, *
    more than watchmen for the morning.

    6O Israel, wait for the Lord, *
    for with the Lord there is mercy;

    7With him there is plenteous redemption, *
    and he shall redeem Israel from all their sins.

  2. I remember having to leave, when my Council said so. I understand the grief. May the good Bishop’s soul, and the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
