In 1361 Peter Thomas was on the island of Cyprus when a serious plague broke out, probably a species of the Black Death which had ravaged Europe a few years previously. He ministered to the sick, caring for them, consoling them, burying the dead. As a result of his efforts during this plague and the reputation he acquired for assisting the sick, St. Peter Thomas was particularly invoked during the succeeding ages in time of pestilence. The liturgical prayer for his feast beseeches that “we may be preserved from the illness of pestilence.”
