Quote of the day: 24 October

During the past week, the year commemorating the fourth centenary of the death of Saint Teresa of Jesus was inaugurated. Cardinal Anastasio Ballestrero presided as my Special Envoy over the inaugural celebrations in the city of Alba de Tormes, where the Saint’s body lies, and in Avila, her hometown. Santa Teresa is the first woman to be proclaimed Doctor of the Church.

It is my heartfelt wish that the commemorative year, recently inaugurated, may arouse a renewed interest in the figure of this great Saint, so that an army of souls spiritually nourished by her doctrine may be inflamed with a lively desire to advance generously on the paths of holiness.

Translator’s note: Literally translated, His Holiness desired to see “many phalanxes of souls” spiritually nourished by the doctrine of St. Teresa.
