Quote of the day: 29 September

Mother Agnès of Jesus

In the morning, she appeared to be in the state of agony; she had a very painful death rattle and could hardly breathe. The community was called and gathered around her bed to recite the prayers from the Manual. After about an hour, Our Mother [Marie de Gonzague] dismissed the sisters.

At noon she said to Our Mother:

Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus

Mother, is this the agony?…. How do I die? I will never know how to die!

  1. That’s incredibly moving. I have neve read that before. As she is a canonized Saint and Doctor, it tells me that human fear and reluctance to accept, are not a sin – even Christ felt the same in His Agony, we are told. There are voices who say it means you do not have enough faith: evidently that is quite mistaken.

      1. I’ve been reading that very phrase these last 2 days!!! I could complete the quote from memory. Thank you: it’s a great lens through which to view St Therese. I also think of “He must increase, and I must decrease” in her regard.
